Women in Tech Day: Leading change and driving innovation at HFL
4 April 2025
We talk technology with Serena Queripel and Siubhan Groves
As the tech industry continues to evolve, so too does the representation of women within it.
At HFL, two of the driving forces behind embracing technology and operational excellence are Serena Queripel, Head of Business Change, and Siubhan Groves, Head of Business Operations. Their stories, perspectives, and advice highlight the importance of inclusion, adaptability, and boldness in a traditionally male-dominated field.
Interestingly, neither Siubhan nor Serena set out with the goal of working in tech. Siubhan’s career began in trust and company administration, eventually leading her into compliance. Yet, even early on, she was the go-to person for IT support - an unofficial role that eventually evolved into a more formal operations position where technology became a key part of her work.
Over time, she discovered a passion for using tech to improve processes, solve problems, and drive meaningful change. Today, her interests are increasingly focused on the dynamic world of cyber security - a space she describes as “constantly evolving, critical, and fundamental to safeguarding systems and infrastructure.”
Serena began her career in audit, qualifying as an accountant, before transitioning into industry as a fund accountant. It was in this role that she became known for her aptitude in tech support, her Excel expertise, and her keen eye for identifying opportunities to enhance accounting systems. Building on this foundation, she made the bold decision to pivot her career path and joined HFL’s operations team in a more data-focused role.
Since joining HFL, Serena has taken on a variety of roles across the business, gaining insight into the operations of multiple departments. This broad exposure, combined with her drive to improve efficiency through technology, ultimately led her to her current role as Head of Business Change. Along the way, she’s played a pivotal role in leading tech-driven initiatives, championing smarter ways of working, and bridging the gap between business needs and innovative solutions.
While both leaders acknowledge progress in gender representation, the journey hasn’t been without its moments. Serena reflects on occasional assumptions made about her role in professional settings.
“There have been times when people assumed I was someone’s assistant rather than the person leading the tech or change initiative,” she said.
Yet, she’s quick to emphasise how fortunate she feels to work at HFL, where female leadership is visible and valued.
“That strong representation at the top makes a huge difference - it fosters an inclusive culture and sets a powerful example.”
Both women agree that inclusivity must be an intentional part of any organisation’s culture. For Siubhan, creating an environment where diverse voices are genuinely heard is key.
“Representation matters, especially in leadership,” she said.
“It shows what’s possible and helps build a workplace where everyone can thrive.”
Encouraging the next generation of women in tech is another passion point for Serena. Her advice? Stay curious, and don’t feel boxed in by the idea of needing a traditional IT background.
“Tech is a vast space, and there’s room for a variety of skills,” she explained.
“Soft skills like communication, adaptability, and problem-solving are incredibly valuable. Most importantly, back yourself. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and never let imposter syndrome hold you back.”
Balancing the demands of a career in tech with personal well-being is something both leaders take seriously. Siubhan points out that working in a fast-paced, constantly shifting industry requires boundaries and intentionality.
“I’ve learned to be mindful with my time, both in and out of work,” she said.
“Taking breaks, prioritising, and switching off when needed are all essential. And I’m grateful that HFL places a real emphasis on work-life balance - that support makes a huge difference.”
Looking ahead, the future of tech is brimming with potential - and disruption. Serena is especially interested in the impact of artificial intelligence.
“AI has the power to transform how we operate, by automating repetitive tasks, enhancing data accuracy as well as enhancing our ability to protect ourselves, particularly in areas like cyber security. It’s evolving fast, and we’re only just beginning to see what’s possible,” said Serena.
But with that innovation, she added, comes responsibility. Ethical considerations, data privacy, and governance must remain front and centre as adoption grows. Siubhan also notes that as AI continues to advance, we must be more vigilant than ever against emerging threats and misuse.
“AI powered phishing, deepfake voice scams, and other advanced social engineering tactics are evolving rapidly” she said.
“Staying ahead of evolving threats requires continuous learning, strategic awareness, and a commitment to staying proactive.”
At HFL, the presence and leadership of women like Serena and Siubhan serve as a reminder that the tech industry is not only changing, it’s becoming more inclusive, innovative, and dynamic than ever. Their stories reflect the progress made and the possibilities that lie ahead for women in tech - today, and in the future.
